Irish happiest in Europe
| The European Commission in Ireland:
"EU Poll shows 92 per cent of Irish people satisfied with their lives and 73 per cent believe EU membership is a good thing Tuesday, December 20th, 2005 Irish people are more satisfied with the lives they lead than most Europeans according to a Eurobarometer opinion poll published today by the European Commission. 92 per cent of Irish people are satisfied with their lives compared with an EU average of 80 per cent. Margot Wallstr?m, Vice-President of the European Commission, responsible for Institutional Relations and Communication Strategy, said about the survey: ?The new Eurobarometer gives us the photograph of the Union at the end of a difficult year. The European Union needs now to consolidate its achievements and show determination in winning back the hearts and minds of its citizens. Never before has this task been so important. Citizens have seen too much of selfish interest by Member States, too little vision and solidarity. I still believe people want more Europe, with leadership and good policies. ? Martin Territt, Director of the European Commission Representation in Ireland said: ?Despite a testing year, Irish support levels have held up well. The continued relevance of the EU is clearly recognised by people in their lives. This level of support cannot be taken for granted.? The poll indicates that the most important issues in Irish people?s minds are the Healthcare System (50 per cent) and Crime (42 per cent). This contrasts sharply with the average EU sentiment (other Europeans) which puts Unemployment (44 per cent) and the Economic Situation (26 per cent) at the top of their priorities. Half of the Union?s population believe EU membership is a good thing, whereas Ireland?s support for EU membership tops the league at 73 per ce" |
